MUSIC CH▲SER: Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa’s “Payphone”
Maroon 5 debuted their new single on Monday from their upcoming album “Overexposed”, which hits stores on June 26. The track, produced by Benny Blanco, features a rap verse by Wiz Khalifa and is melodically much different from Maroon 5’s other singles.
The band’s frontman Adam Levine recently tweeted, “(We) didnt really want to have a collaboration on the album but we heard @RealWizKhalifa was interested. He’s the future.”
“Payphone” chronicles life after a breakup and features lyrics such as, “I’m at a payphone trying to call home. All of my change I spent on you. Where have the times gone?” and “Still stuck in that time when we called it love. But even the sun sets in paradise.” With less of an electric-guitar-rock feel and more catchy-boy-band verses, Maroon 5 knows how to appeal to what is popular right now on the radio. I believe this song will find its way to the top of the charts as soon as it hits radio stations in the coming days.
